The number is growing so fast, it’s difficult to have an precise count. However, at the last assessment, there were more than 4,145 vacation ownership resorts, located in 81 countries around the world. Since 1990, the industry has grown 75 percent.

The American Resort Development Association establishes the highest standards of quality and services, as well as its Code of Standard and Ethics, which members strictly adhere to. The first known vacation ownership plan was at Superdelouvy, a ski resort in the French Alps. It was an immediate success. The idea spread to the United States in the 1970s, and today it is a more than $2 billion industry. |
